A Numbers Game - Lake County Producers Score 90+ Point Ratings from Wine Enthusiast

Terry Derenuik - November 28, 2016

People use many criteria to select wine – cool labels, friend’s or restaurant recommendations, ads, social media, & posts by your favorite blogger, wine competition medals, and critics’ scores to name a few.  This has been a very good year for critics’ scores for Lake County wines.  Wine Enthusiast Magazine awarded 90 points or better to 31 Lake County wines produced under a dozen Lake County labels in 2016.

Jim Gordon, a 30 year veteran of the wine industry, reviews wines from Lake County for the Wine Enthusiast Tasting Panel.  Wines are submitted by producers throughout the year for review.  Gordon explained the ratings this way, “Technically speaking, in Wine Enthusiast reviews, 90-93 scores mean excellent quality and highly recommended. 94-97 points mean superb wines that are great achievements in winemaking, and 98-100 means the pinnacle of quality. But to me, any wine deserving of a 90 or higher score passes a certain invisible threshold of excitement. It's a wine I enthusiastically want to share, by telling my readers and my friends about it.”

So here is the 2016 list of Lake County wines that scored 90+ point wines.  Now that the holidays are here, there are many reasons to reach for a bottle of great wine – parties, gifts, or to treat yourself.  Click on the varietal and it will take you to the full wine review.   Happy sipping and happy holidays!
